Our garden is taking shape
Thanks to a grant received from Startfund USA, and thanks to the continuous support of Uniting People's team, we have been able to launch our first sustainable project: a large vegetable garden and a chicken farm. Our goal is to gradually be able to provide lunch to the children, and to sell the excess vegetables, eggs and chicken produce to help pay our expenses, such as teachers and staff wages.
Below are pictures taken of the land we purchased, and the progress made in clearing and landscaping. We have deisgned three terraces, in order to retain the water. We are planning to start planting sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, eggplants, beans and green maize, using our own manure. We will start building the chicken farm as soon as the rainy season ends.
Agriculture is an examinable subject in the Primary and Secondary school curriculum in Malawi, and our students will now have the chance to learn "hands on" how to grow crops and how to raise chicken (both for the meat and the eggs). These skills will not only help them in school but also throughout their lives, as Malawi is an agriculture-based country. The children will also learn the basics of running a business, a farm.
