Paradis des Indiens Schools
The main school in the village has a kitchen. In the mountain schools, the food is cooked in the schoolyards in large pots that are placed on top of rocks. Because Fondation Paradis des Indiens does all that is possible to protect the environment, the use of charcoal in the kitchens is prohibited. Instead, the students gather dry sticks of wood on their way to school which are used to make the fire. The food takes quite a long time to cook because the cooking is done in the open air. In addition whenever it rains the cooks have difficulty finding a sheltered area where they can cook without getting wet. We believe that having a kitchen will facilitate the cooking so that the food can be ready earlier. The meal is served early because the students come from very poor families. The meal provided in the schools is often the only meal they have for the day. By feeding them early the students are better prepared for the class and therefore learn better.
