No Peace in the Himalayas
"There is no noise in the world. There is no peace in the Himalayas. Both are within you." Paramahansa Yogananda.
There has been little peace in the Himalayas recently. We have been experiencing many strikes and curfews in Kashmir in the past 2 weeks, due to the security forces killing two children who were walking home from playing cricket. One was shot in the head with a tear gas canister. He was 14. The other was shot in the chest with a rifle. He was 16. When senseless killings like these occur here by the security forces, it makes it very difficult for us to do our work for the poor Kashmiris with disabilities, as all Kashmir gets shut down with protests for days. No buses run, few shops are open, and the Kashmiris with disabilities stay home, and the therapists cannot get to them as well. This continuing unrest makes it difficult for us to obtain help from Kashmiris, who struggle financially to survive in this environment. Here is an article on the situation: http://www.risingkashmir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20557&Itemid=55
And it makes it difficult for us to develop relationships with potential donors from outside Kashmir. Potential donors from the developed countries tend to stay away from places rated "extremely dangerous" on the travel advisories. They don't come here for business, and they rarely come here for pleasure. So we depend on communication through compassionate folks like Uniting People to help get the word out about our existence, our struggles, and our work with Kashmiris with disabilities, and the challenges they face.
