Earthquake Returnees
Haiti suffered several major disasters in recent years. Two years ago, hurricanes devastated the country. This year a catastrophic earthquake destroyed much of the country and killed more than 200,000 people. A large number of people who were living in Port-au-Prince, have returned to their native villages after the earthquake. While the people of Abricots are happily welcoming their friends and parents, the return of 10,000 people to a region that is already poor and lacks work has created a heavy burden on an economic situation that was already disastrous. The number of people in some families has doubled and many of the returnees are now sleeping in tents in the yards of those who took them in. Many of the returnees were wounded and sick, all were hungry and came back with only the clothes on their backs.
