April 2009: new toilets with running water

In April 2009, we started building toilets with running water for our secondary school students. These sanitation facilities are extremely needed at the Jacaranda school; so far all our 320 students have been using pit latrines, which are unhygienic and can be hazardous. Thanks to the incredible support and energy of the teachers and students of the Shanghai American School (in China), we are now able to build and complete the facilities. This is a key step for the Jacaranda school: with proper toilets with running water, the students will be comfortable and will perform better in class. Their standards of hygiene will improve dramatically and they will be healthier. The Jacaranda school will also become a center for education for the whole area. The students will take their national exams right here at the school, along with students coming from other schools.

Thanks to Robert Burke, the teacher from Shanghai American School who heard about Marie's story and decided to help her achieve her goals, and thanks to all the students who joined Robert to raise funds to build these toilets, the Jacaranda school is taking a huge step forward. We cannot wait to welcome at the Jacaranda school Robert and his group of students who are coming to Malawi in June. They will see for themselves what their efforts and passion have achieved on the ground; and first and foremost, they will meet our students and exchange experiences and knowledge.
